Harmony Bridge |
About the grant
Grant recipients: Jini Block, Steven Schmitz (HS Bands) Randy Moore MS Bands) Mike Levine (Harmony Bridge Coordinator),
Purpose: “Harmony Bridge” is a music program developed by Mike Levine, who grew up in St. Louis Park and founded Dallas Brass (Dallas Brass is one of the most well-known brass quintets in the country). In this program, we are furnished with sets of music that are used to facilitate community outreach performance. The idea is that, with the music provided (which is flexible and familiar in nature), students in any size ensemble can achieve a successful performance. This program asks students to be musically proficient and empathetic human beings. Elem would have pedagogically-appropriate music for their spring concert and their experience rehearsing that music would provide scaffolding for them to enter the middle school band prepared.
Results: Students are able to see the steps needed to figure out solutions to math problems. They are making more accurate predictions, and are able to realize connections between math concepts. They are more engaged. There is more time on task. They also have more profound discussions regarding the ways in which math problems can be solved.
This program has been such a success that Principal Shelly Nielsen purchased additional manuals and activity books for each grade level.
